Advent Devotional: Third Sunday of Advent

Luke 1:39-56

I am incredibly blessed to have a group of amazing girlfriends; women who love and support each other, encourage each other, make each other laugh, and celebrate each other’s accomplishments. I see God at work in these wonderful women. We’ve carried each other through the best and worst of times. As I read the Gospel text for this week, Luke 1:39-56, I recognized my girlfriends in the relationship between Elizabeth and Mary. The text says that, “Mary set out and went with haste,” to see Elizabeth. How many of us rush to call, text, or visit our friends when we have something to share? Mary greets Elizabeth, and Elizabeth does not disappoint. Like a good friend, Elizabeth rejoices in Mary’s news, “and exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy.’” I believe it’s her rejoicing that turns Mary’s wondrous news into good news. In fact, Elizabeth’s joy and affirmation seem to encourage Mary’s Magnificat. Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months. The Beatles sang “I get by with a little help from my friends.” Ain’t that the truth!

As we reflect on the story of Mary and Elizabeth this week, let us rejoice at God at work in our friendships. How have they celebrated us? How have they affirmed us? How have they encouraged our hearts to sing? Thanks be to God for good friends and the Good News!
